Biography for Bishop Stephen S. Talmage
He was born on February 5, 1959 in Tucson, AZ. He attended public schools in Tucson and graduated from Sunnyslope High School, Phoenix, AZ. He graduated in 1981 with a B.A in Psychology from the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ and with a Master’s of Divinity in 1984 from Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, IA. He was ordained on March 10, 1985 and called to American Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tucson, AZ and then from August 1990 to July 2006 he served as pastor at Peace Lutheran Church, Peoria, AZ. He has served as bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod since August 1, 2006, being elected to a second term in June of 2012. He has served on the board of Spirit in the Desert Lutheran Retreat Center, California Lutheran University Board of Regents, and is currently chair of the Advisory Board of Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary of California Lutheran University. He also was asked to serve on the ELCA Presiding Bishop’s Mission Support Task Force. He has ministry skills for preaching, teaching, administration, stewardship, and discipleship. He has been married to his high school sweetheart, Barb for 36 years. She is a retired educator having taught kindergarten to community college. They have a son, Craig, who is professor for Entrepreneurship at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, a daughter, Meghan, who works at Feed My Starving Children, and who is married to Todd Borner. Todd manages the Goodwill store at Alma School and Elliott and is applying to become a firefighter. They live in Chandler and are parents to one-year old Benjamin. Steve and Barb also have extended family living in the metro Phoenix and Tucson area. Both Steve and Barb are excited about this opportunity to share their love for ministry if called to serve Love of Christ Lutheran Church.
